A
rich history marks The Carpenter
House. Built in 1898 for Colonel
Henry C. Overaker and his new
bride, "Miss Maude",
the house was set in the middle
of a cotton field which was part
of his many land holdings. It
took three years to complete.
Prominent
in social circles, Col. Henry
was Plano's 8th Postmaster and
the owner of the lumber yard.
He helped organize and served
as a Board of Director to Plano's
first bank. He and other town
members were instrumental in making
Plano a first rate cotton market.
Miss
Maude was hailed as a fine musician.
Many warm summer evenings were
spent on the wrap-around porch,
sipping lemonade and listening
to Miss Maude's repertoire.
G.
Carpenter purchased the house
in the eearly 1920's to ensure
his children would receive the
best education in the Plano school
system. He was a gentleman farmer,
lawyer and judge.
Extensive
renovations
were
made
by
the
Edwards'
family
in
the
1970's.
The
house
has
14
original
stained
glass
windows.
Located
on
the
back
porch
is
the
original
well,
fed
by
an
underground
live
stream.
The
Carpenter House will take you
back in time, to the grace and
charm of the late 19th Century. |
